We recently had the opportunity to taste the awesome 2010 Relentless from Shafer Vineyards. Relentless is sourced from a rugged, remote estate vineyard that delivers consistently full, luscious aromas and flavors and a long, cool growing season that is one of the finest ever seen. Shafer Vineyards is one of Napa Valley’s oldest family-owned and run wine estates. The Shafer family purchased their property, 205 acre site first planted to wine grapes in the 1880s, in 1972 and after extensive replanting produced the first vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon in 1978. John was joined by his son Doug Shafer, as winemaker, in 1983. Elias Fernandez was hired a year later as assistant winemaker. Thirty years later this trio continues to produce some of Napa Valley’s most celebrated Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Chardonnay. Shafer wines are sought after by collectors, top restaurants and hotels, and key wine auction houses around the world. Shafer has been called “one of the world’s greatest wineries,” by wine critic Robert M. Parker. The Shafer’s 40 years in Napa Valley was recently documented is A Vineyard in Napa, Doug Shafer’s memoir published in 2012 by University of California Press. If you enjoy great wine, you need to seek this out.
